I'M A 'SOUTHPAW' TOO!!!!
  • Hello, my name is Judy Ryder.  I am beginning my 38th year as the Physical Education Specialist at Highland Park Elementary. I graduated from the the University of Minnesota with double majors in Physical Education and School and Community Health Education.  My minors are in Child Psychology and Coaching.   For the first 9 years of my career I coached volleyball at Highland Park Senior High School.  In my free time I love to golf, walk, read, bike, and spend time at my SOAK CITY summer 'office'.  I have serious Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny collections! 

    In the primary grades, the concentration is on locomotor movements, gross motor skills, eye-hand coordination and spatial awareness. Activities are of low-organization, usually involving manipulatives. 

    Intermediate students refine the gross motor and locomotor skills through a variety of higher organized activities, and individual and team sports. 

    Fitness, through rhythmic movement, is demonstrated daily by students in all of my (16) classes.  Our culminating event will be the 38th annual Rhythmic Movement Program (Tuesday, May 10, 2016)   HPE will also continue our WELLNESS initiative this school year.

  • Bugs Bunny Volleyball The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

    To pursue a lifetime of healthful physical activity, a physically literate individual:

    • Has learned the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities.
    • Knows the implications of and the benefits from involvement in various types of physical activities.
    • Participates regularly in physical activity.
    • Is physically fit.
    • Values physical activity and its contributions to a healthful lifestyle.

    Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.

    Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.

    Standard 3 - The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.

    Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.

    Standard 5 - The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
