SAP is hiring a full time Reading Corps tutor!

  • St. Anthony Park is hiring a full time Reading Corps tutor for the 2017-2018 school year! Tutors will be trained to work with students in grades K-3 on literacy skills to get all students reading at grade level.   They will implement proven research-based strategies, monitor progress, and help children believe in themselves and succeed- all while building their own skills and professional network.

This is a good fit for those who are interested in exploring a career in education, or who simply want to dedicate a year of service to their community.  Reading Corps is an AmeriCorps program, and as such will receive extensive training, support, and general professional development opportunities.  Over the course of the school year, AmeriCorps members will need to complete 1200 hours of service, which averages 35-40 hours per week from late August-mid June.  Tutors will receive a modest bi-weekly living allowance of $424, and an education award of $4138 that can be used on existing or future college expenses.  If tutors are 55 years or older, their education award can be gifted to a child, grandchild, or foster child!  AmeriCorps members are also eligible for healthcare benefits and childcare subsidies.

     Qualifications:

    • A strong interest in education, specifically helping children practice reading skills
    • Dedication to community service
    • Able to speak, read, and write fluently in English
    • Are organized, responsible, flexible, motivated, and professional
    • Exhibits excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Able to commit to 35-40 hours/week for entire school year
    • Must have a high school diploma/GED and be at least 18 years old
    • As per federal AmeriCorps regulations, applicants must be a US Citizen or lawful Permanent Resident Alien

To learn more about the program and how to apply, contact Becky Kallhoff, Tutoring Coordinator at SAP, at Rebecca.Kallhoff@spps.org or 651-744-2458 or check out www.minnesotareadingcorps.org

  • Interested in becoming a volunteer tutor?

We are always looking for caring adults who would like to give individual or small group help to students in the areas of reading, writing, and math.  Tutors are partnered up with a classroom teacher, who will match them with students who need help, as well as provide activities for them to work through together.  It is a great way to build relationships and make a difference at our school!  Tutors must be available for at least 45 minutes each week, and be willing to undergo a criminal background check.  Contact Becky Kallhoff, Rebecca.Kallhoff@spps.org, to get your questions answered or start the process!

    In the 2015-2016 school year:

    • Volunteer tutors donated 664 hours to Saint Anthony Park Elementary!
    • 75 students recieved regular, ongoing support from volunteer tutors
    • Our volunteer tutors also helped with EDL, the science fair, and student book groups
    • U of M volunteer tutors hosted the entire 5th grade to a tour of the U of M St. Paul campus
