| HELPING YOUR CHILD READ FOR COMPREHENSION | | Your child has been learning comprehension strategies to aid him/her in making sure he/she understands what she's read. You do not need to learn these strategies or teach them to your child. That's our job. You can, however, help your child by doing any of the following:
1. After your child has read a page or two have him/her stop and tell you what he understands from the page. 2. Ask your child comprehension questions. "What did the character do?" "Why did the character do this?" Who, what, why, how, where, when questions are excellent. 3. Have your child retell the story to you after reading.
